Latest Trends in Swimming Pool Design for 2026 (What East Texas Homeowners Are Asking For)

May 17, 20269 min read

Pool design has come a long way from the basic rectangle with a diving board.

If you're planning a pool in 2026, you've got options that didn't exist even five years ago smarter technology, better materials, designs that blur the line between pool and resort.

But here's the thing: not every trend makes sense for every backyard. Some are genuinely game-changing. Others are flashy but impractical (especially in East Texas).

So let's talk about what's actually trending in pool design right now, what's worth considering, and what works specifically for Texas homeowners.

1. Infinity Edge Spas (The #1 Request We're Getting)

This is the feature everyone wants right now and for good reason.

An infinity edge spa sits raised above the pool, with water spilling over the edge and cascading back into the main pool. It creates this stunning visual effect, adds the sound of moving water, and gives you a dedicated hot tub without taking up extra space.

Why It's Trending

It looks incredible. Seriously, it's the centerpiece of every backyard photo on Instagram and Pinterest right now.

But beyond aesthetics, it's just functional. You get a heated spa for cooler evenings (yes, even Texas has those), a water feature for ambiance, and a spot to relax that's separate from the main pool.

I've built dozens of these over the past year, and clients consistently say it's their favorite feature. It's the spot they use year-round, even when the pool itself is too cold.

The Engineering Matters Here

Here's where a lot of builders mess this up: an infinity spa requires precise hydraulics and structural engineering. The water flow has to be perfectly balanced, the spillway needs to be level, and the heating system has to be properly sized.

Get it wrong, and you end up with uneven flow, constant maintenance issues, or a spa that won't hold temperature.

This is exactly the kind of feature where my engineering background makes a difference. It's not just about making it look good it's about making it work flawlessly for decades.

2. Tanning Ledges (Baja Shelves) Are Everywhere

If you've got young kids, elderly family members, or just like to lounge in the water without fully swimming... tanning ledges are a must.

A tanning ledge (also called a Baja shelf or sun shelf) is a shallow area usually 6-12 inches deep where you can put lounge chairs, let toddlers play safely, or just lie in the water and cool off without going full submersion.

Why East Texas Homeowners Love Them

In Texas heat, sometimes you don't want to swim... you just want to be in the water. A tanning ledge gives you that.

It's also the perfect spot for:

  • Young kids and young swimmers yet

  • Older family members who want to enjoy the pool without deep water

  • Pool furniture (we've put umbrellas, lounge chairs, even tables on these)

  • Dogs (yes, really it's a safe entry point for pets)

I'm designing tanning ledges into almost every pool now. They're functional, beautiful, and add usable space to your pool without making it feel crowded.

3. Natural and Freeform Designs (Moving Away from Rectangles)

The classic rectangular pool still has its place, but more families are leaning toward natural, organic shapes that blend into the landscape.

Think lagoon-style pools with rock features, curved edges, and beach entries. Designs that look like they've always been part of the yard, not something plopped on top of it.

Why the Shift?

People want their pools to feel like a retreat, not a public facility. Freeform designs create that resort vibe like you're stepping into a private oasis, not a lap pool at the gym.

This trend works especially well in East Texas where we've got beautiful natural landscapes. A freeform pool with native stone, surrounded by trees and greenery? That's the look people are going for.

The Engineering Challenge

Freeform doesn't mean "random." Every curve, every slope, every depth transition has to be carefully planned for proper circulation, structural integrity, and long-term durability.

A poorly designed freeform pool can have dead spots where debris collects, uneven water flow, and weak points in the shell. But done right? It's stunning and functional.

4. Dark Finishes (Especially Deep Blues and Blacks)

Pool finishes used to be light blue or white. Standard. Safe. Boring.

Now? Dark finishes are taking over deep blues, grays, even black.

Why Dark Finishes Are Trending

They look incredible. A dark finish gives the water a richer, more dramatic color. It reflects the sky, creates depth, and just feels more luxurious.

In photos, dark pools look like something out of a high-end resort. But in person, they're even better the water looks almost tropical, even here in East Texas.

The Practical Side

Dark finishes also hide dirt and algae better than light finishes (which show every leaf and spec of dust). And despite what people assume, they don't heat the water significantly more than lighter finishes.

We're using premium pebble and quartz finishes in dark tones, and clients love them. It's one of those upgrades that feels high-end but doesn't require ongoing maintenance.

5. Integrated Fire and Water Features

Fire bowls. Fire pits. Waterfalls. Deck jets. Bubblers.

People are adding movement to their pools features that engage the senses beyond just the water itself.

The Combo Everyone Wants: Fire Bowls on the Spa

Picture this: an infinity edge spa with fire bowls on either side, flames dancing over the water at night.

It's dramatic, it's beautiful, and it creates an atmosphere that makes your backyard feel like a resort.

We're building these into more and more projects, and they're always the feature that gets the most compliments. They're especially stunning in the evening when the LED lights are on and the fire is going.

Other Features Gaining Popularity

  • Deck jets: streams of water that arc into the pool (kids love these)

  • Sheer descent waterfalls: sleek, modern water features that create a curtain of water

  • Bubblers in tanning ledges: gentle fountains that add sound and movement

  • Rock waterfalls: natural-looking features that tie into freeform designs

These features aren't just decorative they add sound, movement, and ambiance. They make your pool feel alive.

6. Smart Pool Technology and Automation

This is where pools are getting legitimately smarter.

You can now control your entire pool system from your phone heating, lighting, water features, cleaning cycles, all of it.

What Smart Pool Tech Includes

  • Automated chemical management: systems that test and balance your water automatically

  • App-controlled pumps and heaters: turn on the spa from your couch so it's ready when you are

  • LED lighting with color control: set the mood with different colors and lighting scenes

  • Robotic cleaners: set it and forget it your pool cleans itself

  • Energy-efficient variable-speed pumps: quieter, cheaper to run, better for the environment

Why This Matters in 2026

People want convenience. They don't want to spend their weekends testing water and adjusting chemicals. Smart systems handle that for you.

And from an engineering perspective, these systems are just better. Variable-speed pumps reduce energy costs by 50-70%. Automated chemical systems prevent imbalances that damage equipment. It's smarter design all around.

I include automation in almost every pool I build now because it makes ownership easier and the pool more efficient.

7. Outdoor Living Integration (It's Not Just About the Pool Anymore)

Here's the biggest shift in pool design: people aren't just building pools... they're building complete outdoor living spaces.

The pool is the centerpiece, but it's surrounded by outdoor kitchens, fire pits, covered cabanas, seating areas, and full entertainment setups.

What We're Building Alongside Pools

  • Outdoor kitchens: built-in grills, refrigerators, sinks, storage

  • Covered pergolas and cabanas: shade and comfort for hot Texas afternoons

  • Fire pits and seating areas: extend the usability into cooler months

  • Outdoor bars: swim-up bars or standalone setups for entertaining

  • Full outdoor living rooms: TVs, sound systems, comfortable furniture

The idea is simple: if you're investing in a pool, why not make the entire backyard a space you actually want to spend time in?

I've had clients who spend more time in their outdoor living spaces than inside their homes during the summer. That's the goal create something you'll use, not just look at.

8. Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Design

This one's quieter than the flashy trends, but it's growing fast.

People want pools that are beautiful and responsible energy-efficient equipment, sustainable materials, water-saving features.

What Eco-Friendly Pool Design Looks Like

  • Variable-speed pumps: use a fraction of the energy of old single-speed pumps

  • LED lighting: lasts longer, uses less power

  • Salt water systems: gentler on skin, fewer chemicals

  • Solar heating options: harness Texas sun to heat your pool for free

  • Efficient circulation design: proper engineering reduces energy waste

This isn't just about being "green" (though that's great). It's about lowering operating costs and building systems that last longer with less maintenance.

Every pool I design incorporates energy-efficient equipment as standard. It's just smarter engineering.

9. Beach Entries (Zero-Entry Pools)

A beach entry is exactly what it sounds like: a gradual slope into the pool, just like walking into the ocean.

Why Families Love Them

  • Safe for young kids: they can wade in at their own pace

  • Accessible for everyone: no ladder, no steps, just walk in

  • Feels like a resort: it's the entry style you see at high-end hotels

  • Great for pets: dogs can walk in and out easily

Beach entries take up more space than traditional steps, but if you've got the room, they're worth it. They completely change how the pool feels more natural, more inviting, more relaxed.

What Actually Makes Sense for East Texas?

Not every trend works everywhere. Here's what I recommend for Texas homeowners specifically:

Prioritize:

  • Infinity spas (you'll use them year-round)

  • Tanning ledges (Texas heat makes shallow water essential)

  • Dark finishes (they look better and hide dirt)

  • Smart automation (makes ownership way easier)

  • Energy-efficient equipment (our summers are long lower those bills)

Consider Carefully:

  • Beach entries (great if you have space, but they take up room)

  • Elaborate rock features (beautiful, but require maintenance in Texas dust)

Skip:

  • Overly trendy shapes that won't age well

  • Features you won't actually use just because they look cool online
